Season 1: Amberle (Poppy Drayton) and Wil (Austin Butler) Amberle with help of Wil (Austin Butler), a Shannara (half Human and half Elf) and Eretria (Ivana Baquero), a Rover, have the mission to save the Great Tree in order to stop the demons and protect the Four Lands. For each leaf it loses, another Demon is set free to create chaos and war. The Chosen is the only one that can save the Ellcrys now that it is dying. The Four Lands is named after the division in 4 major territories: the Northland (occupied by Trolls), the Southland (where the remains of the Men race live), the Eastland (with Dwarven and Gnomes constantly fighting over land) and the Westland (home of the Elves race and the Ellcrys) – if you want to know more or if this is too confusing just read this article. Humans are no longer in “charge” of the planet after the Great Wars which led almost the extension of the human race and the magical races started to emerge. The story starts with Amberle (Poppy Drayton), Princess of the Elves, attempting to pass through a prove to be the Chosen to serve and protect the Ellcrys, the tree that locks away (in another world) Demons who want to destroy the Four Lands. It’s nice to know they haven’t given up on the series and are trying everything to deliver a season 3 to the fans. Spike Tv has cancelled any possibility of broadcasting another season, although the producer of the series is currently trying to get along with other networks that would want to. Update (8th March 2018) : Unfortunately, until further notice, The Shannara Chronicles won’t have a third season. Although this time the show took a 180º degree change for better and I think is time to bring back my thoughts on season 1 comparing with season 2. At some point, I was bored and even mad while writing so I ended up scrap it. Hopefully for good this time.Last year, I started writing a post reviewing The Shannara Chronicles, although I came to the realization that I didn’t have anything positive or exciting that was worth doing a review of. It’s missing that one element that really helped it sell as something much cooler than almost anything else on television.īut, its’ a new day and the characters are still great, as is the new threat facing The Four Lands. That’s the one downside to the show’s new season. This season it’s clear the money was spent where it was needed most to tell the new story and there was nothing left over to make a village hut look “pretty.” They stood up against anything Game of Thrones had to offer. The castle sets, the forest villages, they all felt tangible and large scaled. ![]() Last season’s home bases were fortresses that felt like it. Not in effects or action, but in its environment. ![]() The show feels budgetary scaled back this season. Now more than ever, the show is putting out front that we’re seeing characters living on a future Earth. This added sense of “this is us, this is our world,” really brings out the best of Shannara, and the series leans heavily into that mindset this season. The world of the Four Land’s is earth post-World War Who The Heck Knows, compared to most high fantasy fiction that takes place in an alternate reality Earth. “Just call it a magic book.”īeyond that, what becomes more and more fascinating about the show episode to episode is how it passes itself off as high fantasy, middle earth drama when, in reality, the show’s a post-apocalyptic urban fantasy series with a hint of sci-fi. An example of this comes when Wil asks Allanon to just call the “Codex” what it is… a magic book. Last season, there were many moments where the show zigged where most high fantasy zags. It’s a show that has no problem kicking the idea of high fantasy in the teeth to tell an interesting story. And yes, it’s easy to dismiss it as the poor man's version of HBO’s mega-hit.īut, there’s something truly admirable about Shannara. Yes, it’s a bold statement to call The Shannara Chronicles the best fantasy series on television. If it fails, then it’s nothing more than one final write-off for Viacom before completing its corporate restructuring in January. If it succeeds on Spike, it will stick around to be a legacy series for The Paramount Network next year. It took so long to get more Shannara because first, the show had to find a network, then it had to find a time-slot. ![]()
